Obedience

Developed in the 1930’s, obedience trials are one of the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) oldest events.  Trials showcase dogs that have been trained and conditioned to behave well in most any situation whether it is at home, out in public or in the company of other dogs.  Obedience is the foundation to many AKC Companion Events including agility, rally, tracking and hunt/field work.    It covers a range of lessons your dog can learn, from tricks to manners to show ring exercises.

Rally Obedience is a good introduction to AKC companion events especially for new dogs and handlers.  A dog and handler team move at their own pace through 10-20 stations, depending on the level of competition and is not as rigid as competing in traditional obedience.  Obedience training can be accomplished at home, in an obedience class, or with a private trainer.  All that is required is your patience, a collar, leash, a sense of humor and an understanding of dog behavior.
